Lockhart-Phillips USA UNLIMITED SUPERBIKE LEG #1

Race Recap: Unlimited SuperBike First Leg
Grant Lopez put his Suzuki into the first turn ahead of the field with his Team Valvoline Emgo Suzuki teammate John Hopkins right behind. Before the end of the first lap, Hopkins had been passed by polesitter Larry Pegram and his Competition Accessories Ducati.

Lopez led through the first lap and most of the second. But, as he entered the turn eight hairpin, his front end tucked and he went down. That put Pegram in front with Hopkins still with him. Lopez remounted and got back on the track way back in the field.

Pegram led through lap five, but Hopkins was never far behind. On lap six, Hopkins dove under Pegram to take the lead. Pegram did not let the young Suzuki rider get away and on lap nine took the lead back. For the remainder of the race, the lead duo traded the front spot.

On the last lap of the 12 lap race, Pegram was in the lead when Hopkins dove inside at the end of the back straight. Pegram tried to answer but came up a little short and had to settle for second. Lee Acree, who had a terrible start, moved through the field and came out the better of a multibike tussle for third through sixth.

Lockhart-Phillips USA UNLIMITED SUPERBIKE LEG #2

Race Recap: Unlimited SuperBike Second Leg

John Hopkins led the field into turn one but he was back in third place by the end of the first lap as Shawn Higbee and Larry Pegram got by.

Higbee led for the first two laps, but Pegram moved around on lap three to take the front spot. In the meantime, Grant Lopez and Lee Acree had come up to challenge Hopkins.

Hopkins moved past Higbee going into turn one to start lap six. Higbee tried to get back around and went down in turn three on the following lap. After seven laps, the front running order was Pegram, Hopkins, Lopez, Acree.

Lopez moved up into second on lap nine and actually led the race for a turn or two, but Pegram held the front spot every time they came past the start/finish stripe.

The Suzukis of Lopez, Hopkins and Acree were going at it tooth and nail right behind Pegram who kept his head down and came across the line first at the end of the race. Hopkins took second with Acree third and Lopez fourth.

This was the first race weekend that Lopez was not on the podium for both legs. He still leads the points battle with 187 ponts. Hopkins sits in second with 165. Acree is third at 154.

SPORTBIKE

Race Recap: SportBike
New Team Valvoline Emgo Suzuki team rider Ben Spies grabbed the holeshot over his teammate John Hopkins to start the Sportbike race. Spies led through the first five laps, but Hopkins moved by on lap six. But this was far from being a two-rider race as Brian Parriott, Joe Gill and Lee Acree were with them to form a five-rider group at the front.

Parriott moved into second on lap seven and began pressuring Hopkins for the lead. At the end of eight laps it was Hopkins narrowly ahead of Parriott, Spies, Gill and Acree. As the leaders started lap nine, a red flag was thrown when two multirider crashes happened simultaneously.

The race was restarted with eight official laps complete and four to go. The starting grid was based on the official running order after eight laps. At the start, it was Spies again leading through turn one. On that first lap (officially lap nine), Parriott drove past Spies to take the front spot. Hopkins crashed on the same lap going into the turn eight hairpin. He remounted but way back in the pack.

As the race closed down, Parriott pulled away from Spies and the rest of the field. At the checkered flag it was Parriott by about 10 to 12 bikelengths with Spies second and Acree third.

APRILIA CUP CHALLENGE

Race Recap: Aprilia Cup Challenge

Polesitter Mike Himmelsbach beat the crowd of 32 Aprilia 250 racers into turn one and led the first half of the race before giving up the front position to Brendan Clarke. Himmelsbach challenged for one lap until he crashed out of the race. Clayton Chapman who had been running up front crashed one lap later. That left Clarke in front with Derek King in second and series points leader Aaron Clarke moving up from a bad start to take over third place. Those positions held to the checkered flag, but the race was not over.

After the checkered flag waved race officials penalized Brendan Clarke one lap for passing Himmelsbach in a waving yellow flag caution area. The penalty dropped Clarke from first to 18th. King became the official race winner with Aaron Clarke in second and Jeff Wood in third. Clarke continues to lead the point standings with 104 points. King is second with 97 points.

BUELL LIGHTNING SERIES

Race Recap: Buell Lightning Series

Mike Ciccotto and Shawn Higbee broke right from the line to start what everyone knew would be a two-rider battle. The only problem was that no one told Ciccotto who left Higbee behind as he totally dominated the race. Higbee rode conservatively in second with the race for third providing all the excitement.

Richie Morris held third with Mark Reynolds and Brian Bodine challenging. Bodine dropped back with Reynolds staying right with Morris to the end.

At the end of the race it was Ciccotto, Higbee and Morris holding on for third.
